Student Development
On
Wednesday June 6, 2001, The Division of Student Life and the Office
of Student Development celebrated the Fourth Annual Student Leadership
Awards Dinner. It was an evening to acknowledge all the achievements
and success that our student leaders accomplished during the last
year. The evening, hosted by Jason Jeffers and Nadia Parmessar,
commenced with greetings from President Christoph M. Kimmich,
who congratulated the students and shared his appreciation for
their contribution to campus life.
The
Student Leadership Awards was established in 1998, to recognize
excellence in leadership and the contributions and accomplishments
of students on the Brooklyn College campus. These awards give
honor and recognition to students involved in clubs and organizations
at Brooklyn College who strive to create a rich and diverse campus
community where teaching and learning come together. They also
acknowledge the commitment and dedication of student leaders.
One of the evening's highlights was the keynote address by Mr.
George Martinez Jr. (Class of '98), who is currently teaches at
Hunter College, and credits participation in co-curricular activities
as a critical part of his growth and accomplishments.
The
recipients of the various leadership awards were selected from
many candidates on campus by a committee of the members of the
Division of Student Life. Recognition was given to those who demonstrated
exemplary leadership in student activities, whose work enhanced
the college community, provided opportunity for student involvement,
and had a positive impact on the quality of student life at Brooklyn
College.
The
Emerging Leader Award, given to three students who have demonstrated
excellent potential in a key student leadership role that has
had an impact on the college community, was presented to Brandon
Bain, for his work with Kingsman newspaper and his coordination
the 2001 student election debates; Tamara Azar, for her involvement
with the Hillel Club, the Feed the Homeless Committee, and the
Multicultural Action Committee among many others and Eli Halpert,
for his work with the SGS student government.
During
this year's recognition, Outstanding Greek Lettered Organization
honor went to the members Omega Phi Beta for their exceptional
work and service to the community. The advisor of the year honor
was presented to Dr. Katherine McEntee, who advises the Chemistry
Society, National Black Students in Science Organization (NBSSO),
and Habitat For Humanity. The Advisor of the Year Award is presented
in recognition of excellent leadership, commitment and dedication
to the students of Brooklyn College. Advisor of the Year Honorable
Mention was presented to Clement Mbom, advisor of the Francophone
Club.
The
Outstanding Club / Organization Award was presented to the members
of West African Students Association (WASA), Night Call (the evening
and weekend students' newspaper) and the Black Graduate and Professional
Students' Organization for their demonstration of outstanding
leadership and service to the Brooklyn College community, and
their commitment to collaboratively sponsor activities with other
Brooklyn College clubs or organizations.
The
Dean's Award for Excellence is presented to three graduating students
who have had two or more years of active participation in a student
activity fee-funded organization. The recipients of this award
exemplify the highest quality of integrity and ethical standards
in leadership, such that the members of the campus community take
pride and are inspired by their dedication and achievements. The
recipients of this year's honor were Millicent Pascall, Chantal
Myrthel-Fabien, and Debra Calvo.

In
her closing remarks, Dean for Student Life Milga Morales acknowledged
Mimi Tran and Denisa Superville as the recipients of the CUNY
Chancellor's Award for Leadership, and Sherry Drazner as the recipient
of the CUNYCAP Award.
