Successful Target-BC Job Fair
3/3/2008More than 1,200 applicants crowded the BC Student Center last week to apply for jobs at the new Target store in the Junction that is due to open in the spring. Despite the somewhat harsh weather, applicants—many of them BC students who were reached by email from the Magner Center—were interviewed over three days to fill close to 700 openings that include cashier and floor sale positions.
The hiring process started last Thursday, January 10 at the newly renovated Student Center, which Target is renting to accommodate its staff and to provide space for the interviews.
Target, the 1,500-store retail giant, and Brooklyn College have partnered to recruit future personnel from among the BC student body and the Flatbush community. A responsible corporate citizen strongly committed to diversity in the workplace, Target made a tentative offer to nearly 20 percent of applicants.
"I need a job and this is so close to both my work and my home and actually fits my schedule" said Odelia Lewis, a Health & Nutrition student who is trying to get a position as a cashier. "Target is known for understanding the needs of students, I've heard."
"And you can move up the corporate ladder in a fairly decent amount of time," added Eric Davis from Crown Heights, who is also trying to use his prior experience to get a job in warehousing or sales. "If the company grows, you grow with it."
