From One Minute to the Next: GI60 Theater Fest

6/17/2008

Gone in 60 Seconds
Brooklyn College Hosts Fifty 1-Minute Plays

On Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14, Brooklyn College's Department of Theater will host GI60 (Gone in 60 Seconds), a theatrical experience featuring 50 plays-all 60 seconds in length. The nearly speed-of-light festival is produced in association with Leeds Met University (UK), and Brooklyn College, NY with support from BBC Big Screen and Leeds University.

Diverse, fast-paced, sad, funny, thought-provoking, the scripts, written by students, early career playwrights and published playwrights, will be brought to life by a cast of Brooklyn College Theater BF.A. and M.F.A. students, Brooklyn College alumni, and professional guest artists.  The plays of four Brooklyn College students—Rosa Fernandez (A Doll's House (Continued)), Christian Marte (Crocodile Hunter), Jose A. Rivera (ID Please), and Ugo Anyanwu (The Freshmaker)—will be featured at the festival, as will Jennifer Provenza’s, a recent M.F.A. graduate, whose play, The Honeymoon, will be performed, too. The acting company comprises 15 actors and two directors with each actor performing in nearly a dozen plays with minimal set and costume design.

The brainchild of Steve Ansell (Artistic Director, Screaming Media), GI60 is the world's first and only interactive international theater festival. The festival premieres one hundred brand new one-minute plays—fifty in the UK and fifty in the U.S. All of them are recorded and made available on Screaming Media Web site for at least one year. (They are also recorded in MP4 format for ease of viewing and download.)

GI60 celebrates new writing by providing a creative platform that allows anybody with an internet connection the opportunity to be involved.

The show starts at 8:00 p.m. each night at the New Workshop Theater (Walt Whitman Auditorium, lower level). Admission is $7.  For reservations or more information, call 718.951.5000 ext. 2768 or visit the website.  All plays will be filmed and available for viewing on the Screaming Media Productions website.

Proceeds will benefit the GI60 Harrogate Theatre Brooklyn College Collaboration Award, a scholarship given to a deserving undergraduate who embodies the spirit of collaboration.
