Brooklyn College was among thirty-nine colleges and universities nationwide honored recently for their outstanding commitment to attaining and promoting diversity during the year 2008. The institutions were celebrated by the not-for-profit group Minority Access, Inc., at the organization’s ninth annual National Role Models Conference held September 26-29 in Arlington, Virginia.
This was the second time in a month that Brooklyn College has been hailed for its efforts on behalf of diversity. Earlier in September the Princeton Review ranked Brooklyn College third in the nation in diversity among its 368 Best Colleges, 2009 Edition.
"This is especially important as we embark upon the next phase of our diversity efforts and implement the recommendations outlined in the new Diversity and Inclusion Plan. This ambitious plan is designed to create an environment where everyone—whether student, staff or faculty member—can realize their full potential and enhance the College’s strategic goal to become a model community," said Jennifer Rubain, Brooklyn College’s director of affirmative action, compliance and diversity, "It is an honor to be recognized by national organizations like Minority Access and the Princeton Review for our efforts to diversify the campus.
Last year Ms. Rubain co-chaired with Professor Nancy Hager, then the acting provost, a group of faculty, staff and students appointed by President Christoph M. Kimmich to develop the College’s new diversity and inclusion plan for 2008-2013.
Among other the schools honored by Minority Access for their diversity efforts on were San Diego Mesa College, the University of Michigan, and Ohio State University.
