Ellen Tremper grew up in New York City, attended Cornell University, majoring in English, and got her M.A. and Ph.D., also in English and American Literature, from Harvard University. She has taught at New York University and joined the Brooklyn College Department of English in 1971. She has been chair of the department since 2000.

She is married and has four children and two English cocker spaniels, Darcy and Bingley.

Areas of Expertise:
Ellen Tremper has published articles on Henry James, children's literature and Virginia Woolf. Her first book is "'Who Lived at Alfoxton?' Virginia Woolf and English Romanticism" (Lewisburg, PA.: Bucknell University Press, 1998). "I'm No Angel: The Blonde in Fiction and Film" (Charlottesville: University of Virginia Press, 2006) was named an Outstanding Academic Title by Choice Magazine for 2006. It received an Honorable Mention from the Popular Culture Association of America for 2006.
