Taking On the World
Brooklyn College alumni make a difference in a wide variety of fields. In law and politics, for example, twelve Brooklyn College graduates are currently serving in the New York State Legislature. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, '70, and U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, '62, are also Brooklyn College grads.
Alumni in the arts and entertainment include novelists Frank McCourt, M.A., '67, and Gloria Naylor, '81. New Line Cinema Cochairperson and Co-CEO Michael Lynne, '61, is a Brooklyn alumnus, as are film director Paul Mazursky, '51, and Richard Frankel, '68, the producer of The Producers. Emmy Award-winning actor Jimmy Smits, '80, saw some of his first plays as a high school student visiting the Brooklyn College campus.
Other Brooklyn College alumni include Nobel Prize–winning biochemist Stanley Cohen, '43, and legal scholar and civil rights lawyer Alan Dershowitz, '59. Former students Bob Dole and Al Sharpton and alumna Shirley Chisholm, all were candidates for president of the United States.
