Academics

Brooklyn College offers its students one of the most outstanding educations in the country. Our graduates—in the arts and humanities, natural and social sciences, education and business—go on to become leaders in their fields, leading successful and rewarding lives.

Undergraduate students choose from more than 125 programs. All undergraduates participate in the Core Curriculum—a nationally recognized program that broadens awareness, cultivates the intellect, stimulates the imagination, develops mental skills and uniquely prepares our students for successful careers. Special programs include First College Year, which facilitates the transition to college through summer programs preceding the freshman year and Learning Communities that strengthen bonds among new students and between students and faculty; and the Honors Academy, which provides outstanding students with interdisciplinary seminars, honors classes, individual academic and professional advisement, small class sizes and a collaborative community of well-matched students, all of which prepares them for careers in, among other fields, engineering, medicine and law.

Graduate students are attracted to more than 100 master’s and advanced certificate programs. Students from groups underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers may participate in the New York City Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation. The college is a partner in the CUNY Bridges to the Doctorate Program, a two-year transition program to the Ph.D. for graduate students who intend to pursue doctoral study at CUNY that leads to careers in the biomedical sciences. Brooklyn College supports its graduate students through the Graduate Investment Program, which includes travel grants, research grants and workshops on grant writing, computer applications, and professional communication and writing.

Our courses are taught by an exceptional faculty —Pulitzer Prize and Obie Award winners, world-famous researchers and scientists, and internationally known artists and composers. Our students have access to a first-rate library and significant funding for research and international education opportunities.
