Home: About Brooklyn College:

In order to certify the quality of its academic programs, Brooklyn College must renew its accreditation status with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) every ten years.   Middle States accreditation renewal is a three-year process that began for the College in fall 2006 and will culminate in summer 2009 with formal action by the Middle States Commission.  The focal point of this intensive self-examination and peer-review activity is a spring 2009 site visit by a team of evaluators from colleges and universities in our region.  It will be their task to review the College’s candidacy for accreditation renewal in terms of compliance with Middle States’ fourteen standards of institutional excellence.  As a community, we embrace this opportunity to celebrate accomplishments, to continue to build strengths and identify new directions, and to target areas for improvement.

During 2006-07, a college-wide Steering Committee was appointed to assist in preparing for reaccredidation, seven Working Groups were charged with research tasks that focus on the College’s compliance with the fourteen Middle States Characteristics of Excellence, and a Self-Study Design was prepared and approved by Middle States.  Approximately 150 members of the College community are currently engaged as members of the Steering Committee and its seven Working Groups in researching and preparing reports focused on the College’s compliance with the fourteen Middle States standards, known as the Middle States Characteristics of Excellence.  As our work evolves, we will be inviting your comment on our research and findings and your help in shaping the final Self-Study Report. When the evaluation team arrives on campus in spring 2009, we will also be inviting you to meet with them and talk about your experience at Brooklyn College.

Self-study is a serious institutional commitment and every member of the College community has a vital part to play in the process. The Steering Committee and I welcome your participation and hope that the information contained in this site will inform you about the process and our progress.
