SUMMARY:LGBTQIA+ Book Club: When Language Broke Open and To Love and Mourn in the Age of Displacement\, by Alan Pelaez Lopez
DESCRIPTION:This month’s meeting of the Book Club features When Language Broke Open: An Anthology of Queer and Trans Black Writers of Latin American Descent (Camino del Sol) and To Love and Mourn in the Age of Displacement. Author Alan Pelaez Lopez will come to campus to discuss the two books. Stop by the center for your free copies\, while supplies last. \nLopez was born in Mexico and constantly migrated between the state of Mexico\, Mexico City\, and Oaxaca’s Costa Chica. At age 5\, Lopez migrated alone to the United States\, undocumented\, and went on to earn a Ph.D. in ethnic studies from the University of California\, Berkeley. Following the Book Club\, there will be an artist talk and writing workshop in the Tanger Auditorium with the author from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. \nThe LGBTQIA+ Book Club meets once a month throughout the academic semester. It provides a thoughtful and engaging environment where participants can delve into nuanced discussions\, reflect on complex themes\, and connect with fellow students\, staff\, and faculty. Our selections span various genres and topics\, ensuring that each meeting presents an opportunity to broaden our understanding of LGBTQ+ experiences and narratives.

SUMMARY:2nd Annual CUNY-Wide Vogue Ball: Tailoring Black Style
DESCRIPTION:The Brooklyn College LGBTA and the LGBTQ+ Resource Center will be hosting our 2nd Annual CUNY-Wide Vogue Ball. This year’s theme will be “Dandyism: Tailoring Black Style\,” inspired by the 2025 Met Gala and exhibit titled “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” \nThe Vogue Ball\, 5–8 p.m.\, will feature several categories for participants to dip\, twirl\, spin\, and show off your best face. Judges will determine who will take home the prizes! Food will be served. Beginner-friendly categories include Face\, Runway\, Performance\, Realness\, and Fashion. \nPrior to the ball\, from 3 to 5 p.m.\, there will be a resource fair with internal partners and external organizations. Come learn about different services provided by Brooklyn College and community organizations. \nThe “ballroom scene” is a vibrant subculture within the LGBTQ+ community\, born in the underground New York City scene. Historically\, these spaces served as safe havens for LGBTQ+ people of color. Through extravagant performances and fashion\, LGBTQ+ people challenged societal norms on gender and sexuality through fashion and gender expression. \nThe ball is for CUNY students\, staff\, and faculty only\, and a reservation is required\, as space is limited. RSVP does not guarantee entry after 6:30 p.m.
