DESCRIPTION:For February\, we will be reading Passing by Nella Larsen\, an iconic book from the Harlem Renaissance. Irene Redfield is a Black woman living an affluent\, comfortable life with her husband and children in the thriving neighborhood of Harlem in the 1920s. When she reconnects with her childhood friend Clare Kendry\, who is similarly light-skinned\, Irene discovers that Clare has been passing for a white woman after severing ties to her past\, even hiding the truth from her racist husband. First published in 1929\, Larsen’s brilliant examination of the various ways in which we all seek to “pass” is as timely as ever. \nThe LGBTQIA+ Book Club meets once a month throughout the academic semester. It provides a thoughtful and engaging environment where participants can delve into nuanced discussions\, reflect on complex themes\, and connect with fellow students\, staff\, and faculty. SUMMARY:LGBTQ+ Resource Center: Gender Affirming Makeup Looks with Starr in celebration of Black History Month
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this workshop to celebrate Black History Month. Starr will focus on a specific makeup looks to provide gender-euphoric results!  \nThe path to understanding ourselves as trans and non-binary is often riddled with physical and social “dysphoria.” Dysphoria is the opposite of euphoria and is often extremely painful\, as we experience a distancing from our own being. The reasons for this are many\, such as prevailing social gender stereotypes. Using makeup can be extremely affirming to all gender identities. Attendees will have an opportunity to try out the looks and take photographs in our photobooth. Lunch will be served. Check out our Instagram (@lgbtqcenter_bc) for updates on the location.

SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Transgender individuals\, especially trans women of color\, face disproportionately high rates of discrimination\, marginalization\, and violence. To bring awareness to this ongoing crisis and to honor those who have lost their lives\, we invite the Brooklyn College community to join us for Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil. This vigil is not only a solemn commemoration of the lives cut short by transphobic violence but also a powerful reminder of the work that remains to be done in advocating for trans rights and justice. \nThe vigil will begin in front of Boylan Hall and travel across campus where participants will carry a large trans flag in solidarity. We’ll settle around the lily pond to read aloud the names of those we’ve lost\, ensuring their lives are not forgotten. The walk will conclude at the LGBTQ+ Resource Center\, where refreshments and support will be provided as the community gathers to reflect\, mourn\, and commit to creating a safer\, more inclusive future for all.

SUMMARY:Rainbow Railroad: LGBTQI+ People Seek Asylum in a World Fueled by Hatred
DESCRIPTION:The world is facing the greatest forced displacement crisis in history. Anti-LGBTQI+ and anti-migrant policies are on the rise around the world\, and the Trump administration has made queer people and migrants a target in the United States. And yet\, while there are LGBTQI+ people who will still need to seek refuge in the United States\, LGBTQI+ migrants are already part of our communities. This event explores the experiences of those who seek asylum based on their sexual orientation\, gender identity\, and sex characteristics. \nSince 2006\, Rainbow Railroad\, a global non-for-profit\, has helped more than 13\,000 LGBTQI+ individuals find safety through emergency relocation\, crisis response\, cash assistance\, and other forms of assistance.
