SUMMARY:Celebrated Scientist\, Nobel Laureate Martin Chalfie Highlights 40th Anniversary of the H. Martin Friedman Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Brooklyn College Chemistry Society and co-hosted by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry\, Nobel Laureate Martin Chalfie’s lecture draws inspiration from a 1939 essay by Abraham Flexner\, founding director of the Institute for Advanced Study\, who argued that society’s obsession with “usefulness” often blinds us to the discoveries that reshape our understanding of the world. Flexner believed that true breakthroughs happen when thinkers are free to explore without a roadmap. Chalfie brings that idea into the 21st century\, showing how curiosity‑driven research continues to spark scientific revolutions. \nChalfie speaks from experience. He shared the Nobel Prize for pioneering the use of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP)—a tool that transformed biology by allowing scientists to watch living cells in action. Yet his path to scientific acclaim was anything but straightforward. \nBorn in Chicago\, Chalfie entered Harvard with an interest in science but graduated unsure of his abilities and uncertain about his future. He spent two years working a patchwork of jobs—janitor\, clothing salesman\, high‑school teacher—before a chance opportunity in a research lab changed everything. One experiment worked. One idea led to a publication. And that moment of discovery gave him the confidence to pursue graduate school and\, eventually\, a career that would reshape modern biology. \nRead more here\, \nRegister for this event here. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Presidential Lecture Series: Liz Dozier
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of insight\, urgency\, and action grounded in scholarship\, leadership\, and social responsibility. \nThe Brooklyn College Presidential Lecture Series welcomes nationally recognized leader Liz Dozier in conversation with Brooklyn College President Michelle J. Anderson for a timely and urgent discussion on the Black maternal health crisis in the United States. \nTogether\, they will examine the systemic inequities driving this crisis and explore the critical role that higher education\, philanthropy\, and cross‑sector collaboration can play in advancing solutions. This conversation will challenge us to think boldly about accountability\, research\, policy\, and care and why addressing Black maternal health is not only a public health imperative\, but a moral one. \nMore information here.

SUMMARY:Teaching With NYC Open Data: Publishing Student Civic Research Through Reproducible Workflows
DESCRIPTION:This NYC Open Data Week event showcases the Brooklyn College Open Data Student Gallery\, a publicly available resource featuring original civic research projects conducted by graduate students at Brooklyn College. Developed as part of a reproducible research curriculum\, students used real NYC Open Data datasets to investigate questions that mattered to them—from public safety and housing trends to environmental and social issues affecting New Yorkers. Using R\, Quarto\, and the open-source nycOpenData package\, each student produced a fully reproducible research chapter that is now published as part of an open educational resource. \nThe session will begin with a brief overview of how NYC Open Data was integrated into the classroom and how students moved from research question to public-facing publication\, followed by short lightning talks from participating students\, each presenting his or her project\, dataset\, analysis approach\, and key findings. Attendees will gain insight into how real civic datasets can be used in higher education to build technical skills\, critical thinking\, and meaningful public scholarship. \nThis session is ideal for educators\, civic technologists\, students\, and anyone interested in public data\, reproducible research\, or innovative teaching approaches. Participants will leave with concrete ideas for incorporating NYC Open Data into their own classrooms or projects—and examples of how student work can move beyond traditional assignments to become lasting\, shareable contributions to the civic data ecosystem.

Discover how embodied epistemology is particularly suited to studying certain pre-1500 C.E. historical topics. Find out how using performance as a tool for historical investigation might work. And hear about some of the innovative\, fun\, and crazy things these two professors do in their research and in their classrooms. \nLauren Mancia is a professor of history at Brooklyn College and professor of medieval studies at the CUNY Graduate Center. She also organizes the LAMEM colloquium. \nKatie Rose Hejtmanek is professor of anthropology and children and youth studies as well as a national and world champion in masters weightlifting. \nRegister for the Zoom meeting

SUMMARY:39th H. Martin Friedman Lecture: Virus vs. Host-Targeted Therapeutics—Redesigning Acid Reflux Medications as Anti-Viral Therapeutics
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will host SUNY Distinguished Professor Carol A. Carter\, Department of Microbiology and Immunology\, Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. \nAlthough there is still no vaccine or curative therapy for HIV/AIDS\, we do have an outstanding arsenal of highly effective anti-viral drugs. Carter will discuss her novel discovery that has framed HIV research for the past three decades and continues to this day.

SUMMARY:Engineering the Nanoscale via Modification of the Local Energy Environment
DESCRIPTION:Neno Fuller\, Department of Physics & Astronomy\, University of Kansas \nJoin us on Zoom\, April 3\, 12:25-1:15 p.m. \nAbstract: Van der Waals (vdW) 2D heterostructures are a promising platform for harnessing interlayer excitons (IXs).Typically\, moiré superlattices in twisted 2D/2D heterostructures create a periodic energy landscape for IXs. This study presents an alternative method for creating a superlattice potential using a periodic array of “up” and “down” molecular dipoles. Our approach involves growing a few layers of titanyl phthalocyanine (TiOPc) molecules on a monolayer of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) through vdW epitaxy. Angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements indicate band narrowing in MoS2 after molecule deposition. Moreover\, time-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy (TR-TPPE) reveals two long-lived IX states with an energy difference of approximately 0.1 eV\, attributed to IX’s localization at “up” and “down” dipole sites. Density functional theory calculations indicate that this energy difference is consistent with the electrostatic potential modulation induced by the TiOPc bilayer. Because the symmetry and the period of this potential superlattice can be changed readily by using molecules of different shapes and sizes\, molecule/2D heterostructures can be promising platforms for designing artificial exciton and electron lattices\, which can be useful for hosting many-body phases such as the Bose-Einstein condensate. \nRegister here.
