SUMMARY:Engineering the Nanoscale via Modification of the Local Energy Environment
DESCRIPTION:Neno Fuller\, Department of Physics & Astronomy\, University of Kansas \nJoin us on Zoom\, April 3\, 12:25-1:15 p.m. \nAbstract: Van der Waals (vdW) 2D heterostructures are a promising platform for harnessing interlayer excitons (IXs).Typically\, moiré superlattices in twisted 2D/2D heterostructures create a periodic energy landscape for IXs. This study presents an alternative method for creating a superlattice potential using a periodic array of “up” and “down” molecular dipoles. Our approach involves growing a few layers of titanyl phthalocyanine (TiOPc) molecules on a monolayer of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) through vdW epitaxy. Angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements indicate band narrowing in MoS2 after molecule deposition. Moreover\, time-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy (TR-TPPE) reveals two long-lived IX states with an energy difference of approximately 0.1 eV\, attributed to IX’s localization at “up” and “down” dipole sites. Density functional theory calculations indicate that this energy difference is consistent with the electrostatic potential modulation induced by the TiOPc bilayer. Because the symmetry and the period of this potential superlattice can be changed readily by using molecules of different shapes and sizes\, molecule/2D heterostructures can be promising platforms for designing artificial exciton and electron lattices\, which can be useful for hosting many-body phases such as the Bose-Einstein condensate. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Faculty Research Seminar: Koppelman School of Business
DESCRIPTION:The faculty from the departments of Accounting\, Economics\, Finance\, and Management\, Marketing\, and Entrepreneurship will showcase their expertise and pioneering research. \nThe Koppelman School of Business Faculty Research Seminars are designed to cultivate intellectual exchange among the institution’s faculty\, scholars from business programs in New York City\, and visiting academics\, with an emphasis on exploring areas of mutual scholarly and intellectual inquiry. These seminars offer a venue for faculty to engage in sustained\, rigorous intellectual collaboration and facilitate the exploration and advancement of novel research trajectories and pedagogical methodologies through a series of regularly scheduled meetings. The seminars are intended to provide robust support for faculty in the furtherance of their research agendas\, while simultaneously fostering collaborative synergy and building a scholarly community around these endeavors. Key objectives include augmenting faculty research output and scholarly contributions\, enhancing publication rates through the presentation of works-in-progress\, examining complex issues that transcend disciplinary boundaries\, promoting collaborative scholarship\, and inviting eminent visiting scholars to disseminate their insights. The Faculty Research Seminar is an initiative sponsored by the Office of the Dean at the Koppelman School of Business. \nEmail Myles Bassell if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:The Cult of CrossFit: Christianity and the American Fitness Phenomenon
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the publication of Professor of Anthropology Katie Rose Hejtmanek’s The Cult of CrossFit. She will be joined in conversation by Lauren Mancia\, professor of history at Brooklyn College and professor of medieval studies at the CUNY Graduate Center. \nWe all have that one friend who’s a little too into CrossFit. They talk about it all the time\, and the way they describe it\, you’d think they were describing a cult. Hejtmanek’s research spans the United States and six continents to understand what makes certain people feel so devoted to CrossFit. Despite presenting itself as a secular space\, Hejtmanek argues that CrossFit is deeply intertwined with American Christian values. She makes the case that the Christianity that shapes CrossFit is the same kind of Christianity that shapes much of America\, usually in ways we do not even notice. \nRegister Now \n

SUMMARY:King of the North: Martin Luther King Jr.'s Life of Struggle Outside the South—A Conversation With Author Jeanne Theoharis and Researchers David Rondeau\, Tyra Smart\, and Gabrielle White
DESCRIPTION:The Martin Luther King Jr. of popular memory vanquished Jim Crow in the South. But in this myth-shattering book\, Jeanne Theoharis argues that King’s time in Boston\, New York\, Los Angeles\, and Chicago was at the heart of his campaign for racial justice. King of the North follows the Kings as they come of age in school in the North and as he crisscrosses the country from the Northeast to the West Coast\, challenging school segregation\, police brutality\, housing segregation\, and job discrimination. For these efforts\, he was relentlessly attacked by white liberals\, the federal government\, and the national media. \nJoin us on for a conversation on King of the North—particularly focused on how the nation’s flagship print media covered King’s work outside the South—with Jeanne Theoharis and three of her research assistants for the book\, Brooklyn College graduates David Rondeau\, Tyra Smart\, and Gabrielle White\, who helped her document this media story.

SUMMARY:Faculty Research Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished guest Leila Dagher\, assistant to the president for public policy and associate professor of economics at the Lebanese American University (LAU)\, has been an adjunct lecturer at the George Washington University since 2016. Dagher is a Senior Fellow at the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies\, Research Fellow at the Economic Research Forum\, and serves on the steering committee of the Mashreq Gender Facility. She has previously served in various capacities\, including as economic adviser to several public officials\, director of the Institute of Financial Economics at the American University of Beirut (AUB)\, and chair of the Department of Economics at AUB. \nHer research applies her econometric knowledge to the areas of energy\, environmental\, and financial economics with a focus on producing policy-relevant studies. Her current research reveals that global energy security is a growing worldwide concern in the presence of high economic policy uncertainty (EPU) that can be addressed by advancing sustainable energy diversification (ED) practices. Energy security can be estimated by combining ED and EPU indices. Her study uses a dataset covering three continents and 26 countries from 1995 to 2023 to measure energy security employing this approach. \nDagher received her Bachelor of Engineering from the American University of Beirut and her Ph.D. in mineral economics from the Colorado School of Mines. Before joining the LAU\, Dagher taught for 15 years at AUB as well as several visiting stints\, including at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and the Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory. \nRSVP Today
