SUMMARY:Normal Violence: A Critical Conversation on the Normalization of Sexual Violence in Our Culture
DESCRIPTION:We exist in a culture where rape survivors struggle to label the rape they experienced\, in which sexual violence is normalized in our relationships and in our society\, and in which violence is so common we don’t know where to begin to untangle it from our everyday lives. During Sexual Assault Awareness month\, we are delving into these topics during a not-so-typical panel discussion on sexual violence\, for a call-to-action from youth. \nOn April 29\, join us at the Proshanksy Auditorium at the CUNY Graduate Center for “Normal Violence\,” a powerful and thought-provoking event that challenges the normalization of sexual violence in our society. Brooklyn College is co-sponsoring this event that is being hosted by the CUNY Graduate Center. \nThe evening will feature a keynote speech by Miss City of New York 2025\, Ashley Staggers\, followed by an insightful panel discussion with leading experts from organizations fighting gender-based violence. A survivor of child sexual abuse\, and prominent SGBV advocate\, Staggers will be moderating a panel featuring speakers from non-profit advocacy organizations such as the Coalition against Women in Trafficking (CATW)\, the World Without Exploitation Youth (WorldWe Youth)\, A Call to Men\, and Culture Reframed. \nThis event is geared towards students with a focus on equipping them with the knowledge and tools to challenge harmful cultural narratives\, support survivors\, and spark real change. This conversation is urgent—join us in shaping a future free from sexual violence. \nThe event is free and open to the public. Attendees will also be able to partake in a selection of free food and refreshments! \nOn April 29\, the CUNY Graduate Center will also be participating in Denim Day\, a global campaign against sexual violence and harmful misconceptions. All attendees are invited to participate and attend in denim if they are able. Please RSVP here. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Stories on Disability Through Our Voices: Born This Way—A Conversation Between Author Yoon Joo Lee and Professor David J. Connor
DESCRIPTION:This event celebrates the publication of Stories on Disability Through Our Voices: Born This Way (Routledge\, 2025)\, the first solo book by Yoon Joo Lee\, associate professor of childhood\, bilingual\, and special education. Lee will be joined by Professor Emeritus David J. Connor\, Hunter College (CUNY). The book explores the lived experiences of Korean and Korean American women with visible disabilities in South Korea and the United States. Drawing upon the work of scholars in disability studies in education and feminist disability studies\, it challenges readers to (re)consider their own misconceptions and assumptions about disability and reconceptualize their understanding of diversity. Lee’s work is distinguished by her ability to connect personally with the women she interviews\, sharing unique yet overlapping experiences as a woman with visible disabilities. Part of the Routledge Book Series Autocritical Disability Studies\, the book uses autoethnography to center the researcher’s personal experiences throughout the process. Lee and Connor will engage in a conversation around values of foregrounding voices of individuals with disabilities in various forms of research.

SUMMARY:Annual Sprague and Taylor Lecture\, Department of Philosophy: “Understanding Privacy”
DESCRIPTION:S. Matthew Liao\, Arthur Zitrin Professor of Bioethics and director of the Center for Bioethics at New York University\, will deliver this year’s annual Sprague and Taylor Lecture. Professor Liao’s lecture\, “Understanding Privacy\,” will be of great interest to everyone who is concerned about the erosion of privacy in this digital age. In an era defined by unprecedented technological connectivity\, we face mounting challenges to personal privacy. Our smartphones track our movements and behaviors\, workplace surveillance monitors everything from keystrokes to facial expressions\, and public spaces are increasingly subject to constant surveillance through CCTV and facial recognition systems. These technological advances raise fundamental questions about the nature and protection of privacy and its protection. Liao will offer a fresh perspective on privacy\, providing a comprehensive framework for understanding what privacy is\, why it matters\, and how it should be protected.

SUMMARY:Lavender Graduation
DESCRIPTION:Lavender Graduation is a celebration\, a declaration\, and a refusal to be erased. It honors LGBTQIA+ students who have navigated academic institutions that were not always built with them in mind—students who have excelled\, led\, and fought for their right to exist unapologetically. This ceremony is both a milestone and an acknowledgment of the barriers these students have overcome and the futures they are forging. The event will feature a keynote address\, entertainment\, and a reception\, bringing together students\, faculty\, families\, and community members in an atmosphere of joy\, solidarity\, and recognition. \nA Lavender graduate is anyone who is graduating from college and identifies as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. If that applies to you\, you are encouraged to sign up to walk at Brooklyn College’s Lavender Graduation ceremony. \nGraduates Sign Up Here Audience Members RSVP

SUMMARY:B.F.A. Capstone Thesis Exhibition 2025
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, the Art Gallery at Brooklyn College is hosting an exhibition featuring student work created as part of the Art B.F.A. Capstone Thesis course. The exhibition will run through June 6. An opening reception will be held on May 13 at 5 p.m. The gallery is located on the lower level of Boylan Hall. \nAbout the exhibition\, curator Tahir Karmal writes\, “Here\, the artists push against their own silos\, using their work to break down barriers. This exhibition is not just about self-expression; it is a confrontation with how we hide from each other\, and an urgent call to consider how we might connect with one another despite our differences. At its core\, this work asks us to face the risks of honesty—and the compassion required to meet each other fully.” \nRead More \nExhibiting Artists \n\nLeah Bennett\nDylan Calderon\nKevin Cardoso\nYadira Cepeda\nVivian Ellis\nElena Grachev\nAmani Hanna Gripper\nWafa Haider\nJin Wen Huang\nJesse Irizarry\nZain Latif\nCindy Peralta Rodriguez\nJeanette Tebele Terzi\nLeiah Thompson\nJian Lin Wang\nJenny Yu

SUMMARY:LGBTQIA+ Book Club: Are you my Mother\, by Alison Bechdel
DESCRIPTION:The monthly LGBTQIA+ Book Club meetings are open to students\, staff\, and faculty\, and titles relate to LGBTQIA+ stories and histories. This is made possible in collaboration with the Women’s and Gender Studies program. \nIn this introspective and incredibly layered graphic memoir\, acclaimed cartoonist Alison Bechdel turns her lens inward to explore the complex relationship between mother and daughter. A companion piece to her bestselling Fun Home\, Are You My Mother\, traces Bechdel’s lifelong effort to understand her emotionally distant mother—a former actress\, avid reader\, and frustrated artist—through the prisms of psychoanalysis\, dreams\, and literary theory. \nBlending personal history with the works of Virginia Woolf\, Donald Winnicott\, and other thinkers\, Are You My Mother? is a poignant meditation on identity\, memory\, queer becoming\, and the psychological imprints of maternal love.

SUMMARY:Inflation Solution Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The Inflation Solution Challenge series provides students with a comprehensive understanding of inflation\, a critical macroeconomic concept and metric. Guest speakers discuss the definition and measurement of inflation\, its underlying causes\, its economic ramifications\, government policies aimed at inflation management\, and the strategies employed by companies to mitigate cost increases. Participants are tasked with selecting a company to research and prepare a report that examines the fluctuations in the profit margin during an inflationary period measured by the most prominent indicator of inflation\, the Consumer Price Index (CPI)\, which quantifies the percentage change in the prices of a basket of goods and services typically consumed by households. \nPauline Rhoden received the $5\,000 first prize for the 2024 Koppelman School of Business Inflation Solution Challenge\, developed and organized by Professor Carol Connell in collaboration with professors Myles Bassell and Charles Stone. \nEmail Myles Bassell with questions and to RSVP.
