SUMMARY:The Poetry of Picture Books: Matthew Burgess and Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Lyricism\, rhythm\, concision\, musicality… The qualities we often associate with poetry are equally important in a picture book text\, and both are best experienced when read aloud. It is no coincidence that many poets have tried their hand at writing picture books\, often with tremendous success. For this event\, join Matthew Burgess and Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie—both poets\, professors\, and picture book authors—for a lively discussion and reading of their recent titles\, Fireworks and We Go Slow\, respectively. A Q&A will follow.

SUMMARY:Migration\, Citizenship\, and the U.S. Constitution
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Supreme Court narrowly upheld birthright citizenship in June 2026\, and the invocations of competing versions of U\,S\, history in the Trump v Barbara opinion sparked questions about the origins of that bedrock constitutional guarantee. What was citizenship like before the 14th Amendment for politically disfavored groups\, and why is the bedrock guarantee of birthright citizenship in the Constitution? Professor Anna Law\, a scholar of U.S. immigration and constitutional law and history\, is the author of Migration and the Origins of American Citizenship\, a timely new book that addresses these questions. Professor Prudence Cumberbatch\, chair of Africana Studies and a scholar of African American studies\, race\, and gender\, will offer comments.

SUMMARY:The Power of Intercultural Dialogue: Octavio Paz Between Mexico and India
DESCRIPTION:In The Tree Within: Octavio Paz’s Years in India\, Indranil Chakravarty explains how the Mexican Nobel Laureate poet and diplomat Octavio Paz became a cultural bridge between two parts of the Global South that are separated by geography\, language\, culture\, and history. As Mexico’s ambassador to India in the 1960s\, Paz immersed himself in the country’s contemplative traditions\, travelled widely\, forged deep friendships with some of India’s finest minds\, and produced several of his most inspired poetry and essays. While he gave poetic form to several Indian philosophical concepts and became a mentor to a generation of avant garde painters\, he opened pathways through which Latin American writers and artists could draw inspiration from India.
