SUMMARY:Inflation Solution Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The Inflation Solution Challenge series provides students with a comprehensive understanding of inflation\, a critical macroeconomic concept and metric. Guest speakers discuss the definition and measurement of inflation\, its underlying causes\, its economic ramifications\, government policies aimed at inflation management\, and the strategies employed by companies to mitigate cost increases. Participants are tasked with selecting a company to research and prepare a report that examines the fluctuations in the profit margin during an inflationary period measured by the most prominent indicator of inflation\, the Consumer Price Index (CPI)\, which quantifies the percentage change in the prices of a basket of goods and services typically consumed by households. \nPauline Rhoden received the $5\,000 first prize for the 2024 Koppelman School of Business Inflation Solution Challenge\, developed and organized by Professor Carol Connell in collaboration with professors Myles Bassell and Charles Stone. \nEmail Myles Bassell with questions and to RSVP.

SUMMARY:Faculty Research Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished guest Leila Dagher\, assistant to the president for public policy and associate professor of economics at the Lebanese American University (LAU)\, has been an adjunct lecturer at the George Washington University since 2016. Dagher is a Senior Fellow at the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies\, Research Fellow at the Economic Research Forum\, and serves on the steering committee of the Mashreq Gender Facility. She has previously served in various capacities\, including as economic adviser to several public officials\, director of the Institute of Financial Economics at the American University of Beirut (AUB)\, and chair of the Department of Economics at AUB. \nHer research applies her econometric knowledge to the areas of energy\, environmental\, and financial economics with a focus on producing policy-relevant studies. Her current research reveals that global energy security is a growing worldwide concern in the presence of high economic policy uncertainty (EPU) that can be addressed by advancing sustainable energy diversification (ED) practices. Energy security can be estimated by combining ED and EPU indices. Her study uses a dataset covering three continents and 26 countries from 1995 to 2023 to measure energy security employing this approach. \nDagher received her Bachelor of Engineering from the American University of Beirut and her Ph.D. in mineral economics from the Colorado School of Mines. Before joining the LAU\, Dagher taught for 15 years at AUB as well as several visiting stints\, including at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and the Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory. \nRSVP Today
