SUMMARY:Normal Violence: A Critical Conversation on the Normalization of Sexual Violence in Our Culture
DESCRIPTION:We exist in a culture where rape survivors struggle to label the rape they experienced\, in which sexual violence is normalized in our relationships and in our society\, and in which violence is so common we don’t know where to begin to untangle it from our everyday lives. During Sexual Assault Awareness month\, we are delving into these topics during a not-so-typical panel discussion on sexual violence\, for a call-to-action from youth. \nOn April 29\, join us at the Proshanksy Auditorium at the CUNY Graduate Center for “Normal Violence\,” a powerful and thought-provoking event that challenges the normalization of sexual violence in our society. Brooklyn College is co-sponsoring this event that is being hosted by the CUNY Graduate Center. \nThe evening will feature a keynote speech by Miss City of New York 2025\, Ashley Staggers\, followed by an insightful panel discussion with leading experts from organizations fighting gender-based violence. A survivor of child sexual abuse\, and prominent SGBV advocate\, Staggers will be moderating a panel featuring speakers from non-profit advocacy organizations such as the Coalition against Women in Trafficking (CATW)\, the World Without Exploitation Youth (WorldWe Youth)\, A Call to Men\, and Culture Reframed. \nThis event is geared towards students with a focus on equipping them with the knowledge and tools to challenge harmful cultural narratives\, support survivors\, and spark real change. This conversation is urgent—join us in shaping a future free from sexual violence. \nThe event is free and open to the public. Attendees will also be able to partake in a selection of free food and refreshments! \nOn April 29\, the CUNY Graduate Center will also be participating in Denim Day\, a global campaign against sexual violence and harmful misconceptions. All attendees are invited to participate and attend in denim if they are able. Please RSVP here. \n  \n
