The Honorable Margaret Anne Pui Yee Chan ’79 was designated to the Appellate Division by Governor Kathy Hochul on July 24. Born in Hong Kong, Justice Chan immigrated first to Canada and then to Brooklyn at age 14. A proud Brooklyn College graduate who studied economics, she went on to earn her J.D. from Touro Law Center on scholarship, serving as managing editor of the Law Review. Justice Chan was elected to the New York State Supreme Court in 2021 and currently serves in the New York County Commercial Division, where she handles complex business disputes. Her judicial career began in 2006, when she made history as the first Asian immigrant woman elected to the New York City Civil Court. She has since presided over a wide range of cases, from mass torts to constitutional litigation, and served for five years as a senior court attorney at the Appellate Division, Second Department.
