Brooklyn College mourns the passing of Anthony Gronowicz, an adjunct professor in the Department of Political Science and formerly in the Department of History, who died suddenly on May 30.
A respected historian, accomplished scholar, and dedicated educator, Professor Gronowicz served Brooklyn College students on three separate occasions dating back to the 1980s, including as a fellow at the Ethyle R. Wolfe Institute for the Humanities. A member of the CUNY community for more than 50 years, he remained actively engaged in teaching and scholarship throughout his life and never formally retired. Most recently, he taught at Brooklyn College during the spring 2026 semester.
Professor Gronowicz earned a B.A. from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. A full professor and prolific scholar, his research focused on race, urbanization, and U.S. foreign policy. He authored three books and numerous scholarly articles, making significant contributions to the study of history and public affairs.
Professor Gronowicz was deeply committed to his students and to the pursuit of historical understanding. He will be remembered for his passion for teaching, intellectual curiosity, generosity of spirit, and many contributions to Brooklyn College and the broader CUNY community.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and students. His legacy as a teacher, scholar, and mentor will endure through the many lives he touched.
