Program Overview

As a minor in philosophy and the arts, you will learn how to think and communicate logically and rationally and take a closer look at how different perspectives affect the arts. Course work will give you the tools that help sort through some of life’s greatest questions. You will also be able to persuade others, make informed judgments in difficult situations, and learn to detect mistakes in reasoning. You will learn how to write about complex subjects and process technical passages of text.

Where You'll Go

A minor in philosophy and the arts will prepare you for a wide range of careers—in law, business, finance, management, technology, journalism, education, politics, civil service, and the arts—by cultivating your abilities to think critically and creatively about complex problems, and to express yourself with confidence and clarity.

Minor Requirements (18 Credits)

An interdisciplinary minor in philosophy and the arts, offered by the Philosophy Department, requiring 18 credits:

  • Philosophy 3501 or 3502.
  • Two of the following: Philosophy 3315, 3511, 3512, or 3520.
  • One of the following: Philosophy 2101, 2501, or 2200 or any course 3000-level or above.
  • At least six credits in at least two arts or literature courses, offered by other departments in the college. These may be chosen from any courses offered by: the Art Department, the Film Department, and the Conservatory of Music. Courses may also be chosen from other departments in the College, including English, Global Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, and Theater, with permission of the chairperson of the Philosophy Department.
