Mandated Workshops

The following mandated workshops are required:

• Updated Mandated Reporter Training (Child Abuse Identification workshop, New Program)
  • Updated mandated reporter training requirement is now required for all mandated reporters (inclusive of teachers and teacher candidates), including those who have previously undergone previous version of the Child Abuse Identification workshop.
• School Violence Prevention (SAVE)
• DASA/School Bullying Workshop

Needs of Students with Autism

Needs of Students With Autism is required only in some cases.

You do not need the autism workshop if you:

• Complete a bachelor’s or master’s program leading to certification to teach students with disabilities after September 1, 2009.
• Already have students with disabilities teacher certification.
• Complete the early childhood master’s program plus the additional courses for students with disabilities certification listed here.

Needs of Students With Autism is required for New York State Certification only if you are applying for:

• Certification to teach speech-language pathology and have not completed course SPE/CASD 7317 or 7319, or
• Certification to teach students with disabilities or speech and language disabilities and you completed a program before September 1, 2009, or
• Additional certification to teach students with disabilities and you are not in a bachelor’s or master’s program leading to certification to teach students with disabilities. For example, if you take this series of courses (PDF) for an additional certificate and the courses are not part of your college degree, you will need the Autism workshop.
• If you apply for students with disabilities certification and if you completed a students with disabilities undergraduate or graduate program,  and if you get a “Notice of uncompleted requirements,” and if the autism workshop is not credited at that point, send an email, with Autism Workshop in the subject line, and include your name as it appears in TEACH and either your date of birth or the last four digits of your Social Security number in the message.

How to Check If Your Workshops Will Be Credited for Certification

Check your TEACH account.

Check if you have the Child Abuse Identification (new program) listed. It is required as of April 1, 2025. Workshop providers are required to report the data electronically.

If you took the workshop with OCFS, follow these instructions (PDF) to have the workshop uploaded.

Are your workshops listed on your TEACH account, or do you have previous college recommendations for certification?

• Yes:
  • School Violence Prevention workshop: If you have a college recommendation with a completion date after May 2001, the workshop will be credited.
  • The Updated Mandated Reporter (“Child Abuse Identification workshop, New Program”) is required for all Mandated Reporters now. If you apply for certification or finish your requirements on or after April 1, 2025, it is required for certification. The data for the updated workshop must be uploaded by the workshop provider electronically. If you have a college recommendation with a completion date between May 2001 and before March 31, 2025, the previous version of the Child Abuse Identification workshop will be credited.
  • Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) workshop: If you have a college recommendation with a completion date after December 31, 2013, the workshop will be credited.
• No: If you do not have a previous recommendation for certification, you can send the workshop certificates to the certification officer by email. If you graduate or apply for certification on or after April 1, 2025, the Updated Mandated Reporter (“Child Abuse Identification workshop, New Program”) is required and the workshop provider is required to report the data electronically.

You can complete the workshops by choosing from the following providers online:

• Mandated Reporter Resource Center, for the free Updated Training in Child Abuse Identification and Reporting. You will need to follow these instructions (PDF) to have the workshop from OCFS uploaded.
• The United Federation of Teachers: The UFT Teacher Center is holding free online workshops throughout the year to enable members to fulfill the updated mandated reporter training.
• CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies Murphy Institute: free.
• DASA: Dignity for All Students, training on the social patterns of harassment, bullying, and discrimination, list of approved providers.
• Needs of Students With Autism, list of approved providers.
• School Violence Prevention and Intervention, list of approved providers which includes this online workshop.
