Program Overview

Learning another language is one of the most valuable skills you can possess. As a minor in Russian studies, you will increase your knowledge and understanding of the Russian world and literature. This program will also complement your chosen major with international perspectives.

Where You'll Go

Declaring a minor allows you to explore other areas of interest and make interdisciplinary connections, and minors complement your major. By declaring a minor, you can set yourself apart as a candidate for job opportunities in international affairs, business, government, and teaching, and can pursue a graduate degree in a variety of fields. The minor in Russian studies will demonstrate your competence in a world language and culture, which is vital to employment in today’s global economy.

Minor Requirements (15 Credits)

A program of 15 credits as follows:

  1. A minimum of nine credits in advanced courses in Russian 1030 and above
  2. With permission of the chair, two of the following courses may be applied toward the minor: History 3070, 3252, 3254; Modern Languages and Literatures 1310, 2012, 2015, 2150, 2610, 3210, 3360, 4500; Political Science 3303, 3309.

It is recommended that the students meet with a department adviser to plan a coherent program of study.

Students might choose a sequence of courses constituting a general survey of

  • Russian literature;
  • translation studies; or
  • Russian for business

All courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher.

A minimum of nine credits must be completed at Brooklyn College.

The department chair, with the approval of the department’s curriculum committee, may allow substitutions for one or more of the requirements consistent with the educational goals of the program.
