There are four types of BLL activities: walking tours and outings; museum walks and talks; bus trips; and our new addition, ethnic diversity luncheons. All require pre-registration and are filled on a first-come, first serve basis.

Please do not send payment until your request is confirmed. Tickets must be prepared within two weeks of confirmation and are non-refundable. Any unused ticket payments will be donated. Total costs if you wish to visit all of the museums = $78.

Backstage Tour of the Brooklyn Academy of Music

Wednesday, Feb. 25, 9:30 –11 a.m.

Visit the hidden areas of this iconic cultural institution renowned for its rich history and vibrant contributions to the performing arts. The tour will offer an opportunity to explore BAM’s historic spaces, learn about its architectural and artistic legacy, and gain insight into its role in shaping contemporary arts and culture in Brooklyn and beyond. 

The Studio Museum of Harlem

Thursday, March 5, Noon–1 p.m.

A museum educator will lead us on a 45–60-minute tour of the newly renovated Studio Museum of Harlem to spark conversation and enhance connections to the artwork.

Afterwords, those interested can gather for lunch at one of the area’s many restaurants.
The museum is located at 144 West 125th Street. It is accessible via the 2/3 and A//B/C/D trains to 125th street. Street parking is limited and metered. There is a parking garage at 216 W. 126th Street which has valet service.

Walking Tour of Hamilton Heights and Sugar Hill

Friday, April 10, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.
Deadline to sign up is Monday, April 6.

This tour explores a hilltop neighborhood shaped by elegant rowhouses, jazz-age culture, and revolutionary ideas, from Alexander Hamilton’s estate to a center of Black cultural life. Along the way, you’ll encounter striking architecture and stories that reveal how this once-rural area became a historically rich enclave. We will be walking approximately 2 miles, ending in time for lunch. Our intrepid BLL president, Robert Mishaan, will lead the tour.

Hudson River Cruise

Tuesday, May 12, 12:30–2 p.m.
$20

We will head down the mighty Hudson River in a narrated cruise that glides by Hudson Yards, Little Island, and the towering One World Trade Center. We’ll pass Ellis Island, close by the Statue of Liberty. Experience breathtaking views of lower Manhattan, quietly slip under the Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg bridges and up the East River before returning in less than two hours on a round trip from Pier 83 with Circle Line Cruises.

Pier 83 is located between 42nd and 43rd Streets and 12th Avenue.

Payment for the cruise will be made in person. In order to get the $20 price, you must be a NYC resident and have proper ID.

The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts

Friday, June 5, Noon–1:30 p.m.
Deadline to sign up is Tuesday, May 19.

Join us at this very special library (worth a visit on its own) which is hosting a major exhibition, “Martha Graham: The Mother of Psychological Dance.” Our visit will last 90 minutes and include a guided tour of the library and exhibition, followed by a period for discussion and questions.

The exhibit will showcase rare materials from the Jerome Robbin’s Dance Division’s Graham archive and explore Graham’s profound legacy in celebration of the Martha Graham Company’s 100th Anniversary.

The library is located at 40 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York.

The tour is free of charge, however, donations to the Library For The Performing Arts are always welcome.

The Events Committee is hard at work planning other trips for the spring. We’ll let you know when the details are available, but here is a heads-up about what’s in the works:

The New York Aquarium (March or April)

The Aquarium is home to sharks, rays, sea otters, octopus, jellyfish and more. We can wander the various exhibits, watch the feedings, and see two shows:

  • THE AQUATHEATER: An interactive show arising from the bonds between sea lions and their trainers. The behaviors taught to them stimulate their natural instincts and aid in their care.
  • THE 4-D THEATER: an immersive experience that combines the visual drama of a 3-D film with built-in sensory effects.

Fort Hamilton Garrison

The visit to this historic U.S. Army Garrison in Bay Ridge was originally scheduled for the fall but had to be cancelled due to the government shutdown.

We will have a tour of the Harbor Defense Museum, the only Army Museum in New York City.

After that, we will have lunch at the Community Club (formerly the Officer’s Club) in a beautiful historical landmarked building.

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (spring or summer)

The refuge is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled spots in the city.

We’ve got an exciting 3-day bus trip to Boston planned. It will include a guided bus tour of Boston plus visits to the Faneuil Hall Marketplace with Quincy Market, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, the Minute Man National Historic Park and the Museum of African American History and a guided tour of Lexington and Concord. If you’d like to participate, remember to sign up now. Deposits are due by February 6. Fliers were sent to all members, but if you need another, you can request one from the office.

The Travel Committee is working on additional trips for the spring.

  • In April, we will travel to Hunterdon Hills Playhouse in New Jersey to dine and see the musical performance, “Some Enchanted Evening.”
  • In May, we will tour the U. S. Military Academy in West Point, NY. The trip will also include lunch.
