A MEDITATIVE WALK ALONG THE SALT MARSH NATURE TRAIL

Friday, September 26,10:00 a.m.

Deadline to sign up is Friday, September 19

This outdoor, nature-oriented experience is a slow, gentle walk on the Salt Marsh Nature Trail alongside Gerritsen Creek. We will do some gentle stretching and “breathing with the tide” before our walk. Along the way, we will learn about some of the vegetation characteristics of the Salt Marsh, the Dutch history of the area and the role the Creek played in the Dutch farming community that existed there. We will also learn about the ecological importance of the Salt Marsh especially in this time of climate change. We will pause several times along the trail for meditative stretching and breathing.

We will conclude our walk with a “Sharing Circle” to share (optional) our experience of the walk in this very special environment. Those wishing to can join afterwards at the Marine Park Coffee Shop on Avenue S between E.34th and E.35th Streets, for an opportunity to get-to-know each other and discover another “little-known treasure” in Marine Park.

The park is directly across from Marine Park on Avenue U. It can be reached by public transportation via the B3 bus to E. 33rd Street and Avenue U or the B41 bus to Kings Plaza. There is also a free, public parking lot in the park on Ave. U between Burnett Street and E.33rd Street.

HISTORIC SHEEPSHEAD BAY

Thursday, October 9, 10:00 a.m.

Borough Historian Ron Schweiger leads a tour of this waterfront neighborhood. Sheepshead Bay has attracted resort-goers from Brooklyn and Manhattan since the 1840’s. Its allure as a fishing destination was enhanced by the introduction of restaurants, roads, and railroads. Horse racing and later car racing led to its further appeal as a tourist destination. We will meet at the Neck Road subway station (Q Train) for this tour.

CLINTON HILL WALKING TOUR

Monday, October 27, 11:00 a.m.

Robert Mishaan will lead a walking tour of Clinton Hill. We will explore one of Brooklyn’s most charming and storied neighborhoods. We’ll cover a rich tapestry of history, architecture, and notable figures who have called this home. Along the way, we will spotlight historical moments that helped shape Brooklyn and meet some famous residents, uncovering the stories behind the bricks and brownstone facades.

And more on the way… The Events Committee is hard at work planning other trips for the fall. We will let you know when the details are available, but here is a heads-up about some of what’s in the works:

  • Fort Hamilton
  • New York Aquarium Poster House
