Navigating Your Career

If you have chosen a career in childhood education, you will be working with elementary school-age children (grades 1–6). Your job will be to understand students’ needs, to work with their parents, and to collaborate with other teachers and educators to create a nurturing and rigorous learning environment so that all students reach their highest potential.

To determine which educational environment—public school, independent school, or after school—best suits your strengths and preferences, you can engage in and network with faculty and alumni.

Getting to know diverse types of schools and educational environments, through fieldwork placements during your major and through conversations with your peers, will help you get a better understanding of what type of setting you would like to work in.
