The decision to study abroad and for how long is both an academic and a financial one. Students interested in studying abroad may be able to use their financial aid, apply for scholarships, and/or take out a loan to help fund study abroad plans. Here are a few options to explore.
Can be applied to short term and semester
What: For undergraduates who wish to enrich their own lives and that of the college by studying abroad during any term.
Amount: Winter/summer: $1,500; other semesters: $3,000.
Eligibility: Brooklyn College undergraduate, GPA of 2.75, planning to study abroad for credit, has grades posted on transcript for at least one semester at Brooklyn College before going abroad.
Recipients will be expected to submit a written report and/or presentation on their experiences to be shared with the donor and other Brooklyn College students.

What: This stipend is for Brooklyn College undergraduate and graduate students undertaking international research and creative arts abroad directly related to their future academic and professional goals.
Amount: Up to $3,000
Eligibility: Brooklyn College undergraduates or graduate with a GPA of 3.0. Undergrads must have earned 30-90 credits prior to the abroad experience; grads must have earned 18 graduate credits.
Preference given to research projects relating to a student’s academic pursuits.
Recipients will submit a written report and/or presentation on their experiences to be shared with the donor, and other Brooklyn College students.

What: For students who design and implement a project, attend a study abroad program, or take on an unpaid internship that is vital for personal, academic, or career advancement.
Amount: Up to $5,000.
Eligibility: Full time undergraduate at Brooklyn College. Recipients must exhibit creativity, determination, and promise in articulating and pursuing their career and life goals. Recipients must have completed between 30 and 90 credits upon award.
Deadline: January 6
What: SASA scholarships are for credit-bearing study abroad programs for any term.
Amount: Up to $1,000.
Eligibility: BC undergraduates, in good standing, planning to study abroad for credit.

What: For Brooklyn College graduate students of art.
Amount: $1,000
Eligibility: Brooklyn College graduate art students. Graduate students should be nearing the completion of their degrees in art history or studio art. Art history students should be traveling abroad to enhance their knowledge of and exposure to historical works of art. Studio art students (drawing, painting, sculpture, or photography) should be traveling or studying elsewhere to further their studies and practice. Preference may be given to those students who are studying some aspect of art and the environment.

What: Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are awarded for one academic year (two semesters or three quarters) of advanced level language study in East or Southeast Asia. Eligible languages are Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Khmer, Thai, and Vietnamese. The Blakemore Foundation makes grants for study only at specific language programs
Amount: Covers the full amount of tuition but can be used for airfare, books, visa application, etc.
Eligibility: Students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (green card holder) of the United States. They should be pursuing a professional, business, or academic career that involves the regular use of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, or Khmer. By the start of the grant,they must have at least a bachelor’s degree. They should be at or near an advanced level in the language. By the start of the grant, applicants must have completed (at minimum) the third year of language classes at the college level, through formal classroom study at a college or university and/or in rigorous college-level language programs. They must be able to devote oneself exclusively to full-time intensive language study during the term of the grant. Grants are not made for part-time study or research.
Deadline: Application opens on July 1 with a submission deadline of December 30 at 11 p.m.
What: Boren Scholarships (undergraduates) and Fellowships (graduate students) provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. students to (1) study less commonly taught languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Yoruba, and others; and, (2) study abroad in underrepresented areas in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Additionally, there is a special initiative for undergraduate STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) majors. Recipients of a Boren Scholarship or Fellowship accept a service requirement to work for the federal government in the national security arena.
Amount: Scholarship: $8,000 summer (STEM only); $10,000 semester; $20,000 for 6-12 months. Fellowship: $25,000 for 25-52 weeks; $12,500 for 12-24 weeks; $5,000 for summer domestic language study.
Eligibility: Students who plan to go abroad for two or more semesters. Preference given to students proposing a minimum of 6 months overseas.

Only for summer term
What: Intensive overseas summer language study and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. The languages offered through the CLS program are: Azerbaijani, Bangla, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Swahili, Turkish, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian.
Amount: Fully funded
Eligibility: U.S. citizens currently enrolled in a degree-granting undergraduate or graduate program from an accredited U.S. academic institution. Must demonstrate ability to adapt to intensive study and living conditions. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.
Deadline: Mid-November
What: For study in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam. Students will receive academic credit for studies. Program length is a minimum of 8 weeks/summer, 10 weeks/quarter, and 12 weeks for a semester;
Amount: Up to $3,000 for summer study abroad; spring/fall semester up to $5,000; academic year up to $7,000.
Eligibility: U.S. citizen or permanent resident; preference given to students who also participate in language study, study a minimum of 20 hours per week that includes language, culture and history study, the program is taught by host country faculty, and the student demonstrates sincere interest in incorporating East or Southeast Asian Studies into current and future academic/professional plans; demonstrates a high quality follow up service project.

What: Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career oriented internships abroad.
Amount: Up to $5,000 (additional $3,000 possible for critical language study).
Eligibility: Open to all U.S. citizen undergraduates, in good academic standing, must be a recipient of a Federal Pell Grant, receive credit for study abroad, the study abroad program is for at least three weeks in one country, and the recipient has not previously received a Gilman International Scholarship.

What: The Fulbright Program, the United States government’s flagship program of international educational and cultural exchange, offers passionate and accomplished students and scholars in more than 160 countries the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to mutual understanding.
Amount: Varies on the program and destination but can go from $1,000 to a maximum of $35,000
Eligibility: Students must have a conferred bachelor’s degree or equivalent before the start of the grant period. They must also meet the language requirements of the award to which they are applying and demonstrate sufficient competency to complete their project and adjust to life in the host country.
