The Beverly Square West Historic District includes 118 houses built between 1894 and 1910 along three tree-lined streets between Beverly Road and Cortelyou Road, just south of Prospect Park. Nearly all of the homes were designed by well-known Brooklyn architects, including John J. Petit, John B. Slee, and Benjamin Driesler.

RSVP by November 2

Out tour guide is a friend of an active BLL-er. He worked at the museum until 2011 and since then has been preparing fossils and developing customized tours. He calls his tour “generalized” which seems to mean specialized in whatever the group’s interest are, or he can choose for us: Fossils? Evolution? North American mammals? Ocean life? NW coast Indians? Human origins? Meteorites? Dinosaurs? He is well-versed in all of them and glad to share his knowledge. Lucky for us, he loves questions. It will be a fascinating 2 hours.

Merchant’s House Museum

Friday, Nov. 20, 11 a.m.
$15
RSVP by Oct. 30

Built in 1832, the Merchant’s house offers an intimate and authentic glimpse of life in 19th century New York City and the struggle against slavery. It is the only intact site of the Underground Railroad open to the public in Manhattan. This remarkable new discovery was announced in February 2026. Two years of extensive research points to a remarkable conclusion: the Merchant’s House is the earliest known site of Underground Railroad activity in New York City.

We will have a guided house tour of period rooms. The tours run about 60 to 75 minutes. This historic building preserved intact from the 19th century is not handicapped accessible. Visitors must climb several flights of stairs over the course of a tour.
