Tow Senior Faculty Mentors

Dedicated senior faculty members, from each of Brooklyn College’s five schools, drive student success by mentoring other faculty. These faculty mentors support every stage of faculty career development, including teaching practices and research endeavors. Additionally, the annual $10,000 Tow Mentorship Prize is awarded to a faculty member who has demonstrated a deep commitment to mentoring students in achieving their academic and/or career goals.

Program Goals

  • Institutionalize transformational mentorship into Brooklyn College’s policies and practices.
  • Provide transformational mentorship to pre-tenure and pre-promotion faculty.
  • Provide resources for chairs to contribute to creating a culture of mentorship.

Across Campus

At the campus level, senior faculty mentors propose and revise existing policies to institutionalize mentoring in faculty policies. They also foster partnerships with existing college offices to promote mentoring opportunities, and compile and distribute information on mentoring and faculty success for use of chairs and faculty.

Within Schools

At the school level, senior faculty mentors serve as resources for pre-tenure and pre-promotion faculty. They meet with faculty in groups to share general information and individually to serve as a catalyst, connector, and imaginer of futures for the mentee. Senior faculty also put mentees in contact with appropriate people and opportunities within the college and CUNY-wide.

Mentorship Trainings

Trainings are led by current senior faculty mentors who have been trained as trainers by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER). Typically taking place over two days, sessions include an introduction to mentoring, facilitating communications, aligning expectations, and diversity and inclusion. Participants receive a $500 stipend and learn skills to better mentor students and colleagues in their departments and schools.

Career Advancement

As part of this program, senior faculty mentors also serve as a resource for junior faculty for guidance on promotion, tenure, and navigating the early stages of their careers.
