Brooklyn College Professor of Puerto Rican and Latinx Studies Carla España has co-authored a new book, Libros solidarios: Teaching Language and Building Community With Children’s Literature in Spanish, K–6 (Brookes Publishing), that features lessons centered on children’s literature by Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latine authors written in Spanish, along with language analysis and paired texts designed to support literacy development, bilingualism, and classroom community.

Co-authored with Luz Yadira Herrera of California State University, Dominguez Hills, the book is España’s first publication in Spanish for K–6 educators. Drawing on her experience as a former New York City public school bilingual teacher, España said the book is in gratitude to the storytellers, educators, and students who inspired this work.

The book’s foreword is written by Meg Medina, the 2023–2024 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature and Newbery Medal–winning author. Learn more about the book here.
