First-Year Students

The First College Year (FCY) facilitates the transition to college by integrating students into the college community as engaged learners and participants in campus life.

First-Year Advisement

In collaboration with the Center for Academic Advisement and Student Success, we offer advisement for all first-year students (incoming and second-semester). During these advisement sessions, you will discuss general education requirements, learn about college policy and course options.

First-Year Online Workshop

All incoming first-year students are enrolled in the online First-Year topics via Blackboard. These topics will help you develop habits that are essential to your academic success and promote self-awareness and self-reliance by addressing 10 topics of immediate importance to first-year students.

  • Topic 1: Help Seeking and Principles of College Success
  • Topic 2: Time Management
  • Topic 3: Finding a Home on Campus and Forging Relationships
  • Topic 4: Studying and Test-Taking
  • Topic 5: Academic Research, Writing, and Citations
  • Topic 6: CUNYfirst, BC/CUNY Portals, DegreeWorks, and Self-Enrollment
  • Topic 7: Academic Planning and Advisement
  • Topic 8: Stress Management and Self-Care
  • Topic 9: Career Exploration
  • Topic 10: Scholarships and Financial Literacy

First-Year Reserved Courses

FCY collaborates with academic departments to reserve seats/courses for first year students. Seats/courses are reserved to ensure that first-year students have the opportunity to enroll in a minimum of 15 credits.
