Entering First-Year Students
Welcome first-year students to Brooklyn College! CAASS Advisors provide essential guidance for new students transitioning from high school to college, including advisement about CUNY Pathways general education requirements and the exploration of major programs at Brooklyn College. After you have been accepted and matriculated, you will be provided with information about how to schedule a CAASS College 101: Group Advisement Session. If you do not receive this information or you have not attended the session, call the CAASS office at 718.951.5471.
How to Prepare for Your Initial Advisement Session
After you’ve registered for the CAASS College 101: Group Advisement Session, here’s how you can prepare for the workshop:
- Explore your area of interest or review your major program and degree maps.
- Review the CUNY Pathways general education requirements.
- Have your EMPLID (instructions found on BCKnowledge) ready to use for attendance and enrollment purposes.
- Have knowledge of the AP, College Now, IB, or transfer courses you will be submitting.
After Your Initial Advisement Session
- Within 7-10 business days, you will be able to view your class schedule by logging into your CUNYfirst account.
- Check the academic calendar for key dates, holidays, and campus closures.

Academics
After College 101, how can I make a follow up appointment with an advisor?
In the Navigate mobile app or desktop version, go to “Schedule an Appointment”, Select “Advising” from the dropdown, when prompted with “What type of appointment would you like to schedule?”, select “CAASS” from the “Service” dropdown, and then choose “Academic Advisement/Planning.”
I have a quick question for an advisor, where do I submit that question?
You can submit your question by tapping the “Hand Raise” button in Navigate to get help with academic advisement questions and general inquiries.
What is an ADV hold in CUNYFirst?
All first-year students have an advisement (ADV) hold on their record for the first semester. With this hold, students cannot add, swap, or drop classes. All first-year students will be required to meet with a CAASS advisor for second semester enrollment. The advisor will release the ADV hold during that meeting.
How do I declare or change my major?
All matriculated students must declare a major no later than the semester in which the combination of credits earned and credits in progress totals 60 credits or more. Where do I submit my credits from Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and college-level (i.e. College Now) courses?
Brooklyn College accepts AP scores between 3-5. Submit proof of AP or other transfer credits to the Transfer Evaluations Office at .

How do I select my schedule for my first semester?
In the first semester, first-year students are assigned a schedule based on their academic interests submitted during the CAASS College 101: Group Advisement Session. First-year students may create their own schedule beginning with the second semester.
How can I take courses during the summer before starting in the fall?
For incoming first-year students, taking a class during the summer II session is a great way to earn additional credits and fulfill prerequisite requirements for your program of study. This is especially true for STEM students. It’s never too early to get a head start. If this interests you, tell your academic advisor.
I took two years of a language other than English in high school, how does Brooklyn College determine my placement in a language course?
To determine your placement, you are encouraged to complete the Language Other Than English (LOTE) Placement Survey and Permission Request form. Any questions regarding placement should be directed to the department office, 718.951.5000 ext. 5451.

How can I access my Brooklyn College email Account?
Access your email by following these steps:
- Go to Outlook
- Sign in and enter your CUNY Login username (lastname##@login.cuny.edu) and CUNY Login password
- You will be prompted to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and follow on-screen steps (usually phone or authenticator app)
- Start using your email. Once inside Outlook, your inbox is ready. This is now your official college email.
