About the Conservatory

Welcome to the Conservatory of Music of Brooklyn College, where students from across the globe, as well as right here in the borough of Brooklyn, work to become the next generation of 21st-century innovators in the musical arts. Students at the Conservatory of Music study with a world-class faculty of Grammy and Guggenheim winners, composers and musicologists, conductors and performers. We offer a strong foundational music curriculum in history, theory, ear training, and keyboard, along with private lessons and a wide variety of ensembles that includes chorus, orchestra, jazz, and contemporary ensembles, among others. But many music students come to Brooklyn College for the top-ranked liberal arts education they receive here, including interdisciplinary opportunities such as those offered through the Performance and Interactive Media Arts program and other fields. Our facilities are world-class and state-of-the-art: The recently opened Leonard & Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts provides our students with numerous practice rooms and rehearsal spaces, stocked primarily with new Steinway and Boston pianos, for their day-to-day preparation and the beautiful Don Buchwald Theater and Topfer Recital Hall in which to perform. The Walter Gerboth Music Library provides yet another impressive resource.

Part of the CUNY system, Brooklyn College gives our master’s students the opportunity to take one or more of their seminars at other senior colleges or at the CUNY Graduate Center, the doctorate-granting institution of CUNY.

Our alumni include public school music teachers and college professors, studio-recording musicians and Broadway pit musicians, music librarians and music historians, performers and composers for the New York City Opera and the New York Philharmonic, opera singers in the United States and abroad, musicians for Jazz at Lincoln Center, and McArthur Genius Award grantees.

We invite you to take a look at the many diverse programs we offer—the cutting-edge and the traditional—and feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
