Educational Projects

Since 2006, GLARE has developed a pedagogical model that draws on performance art to educate on queer issues. Called affective education, this model has been supported by one or more productions annually. GLARE’s list of sponsored productions and interactive workshops includes those listed below.

2009–10

Shadowed Dreamer

Written and directed by Stephen Hart
This one-man dramatic monologue is a testimony to human resilience in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. The piece considers multiple themes, including child abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, gay identity, surviving rape, and learning to live with HIV. The overwhelming popularity of the production led GLARE to sponsor Stephen Hart as an artist-in-residence. During the period, Shadowed Dreamer was seen by more than 3,000 people.

Performance monologues by five actors that give voice to the intersection of queer identity and religious values in the context of a public university.

Tara’s Crossing

Written and directed by Jeffrey Solomon
Based on a true story, this powerful production examines gender identity, racism and immigrant oppression through the eyes of a Guyanese woman seeking asylum in the United States.

Intolerable

Directed by Robb Leigh Davis
Performance monologues by five professional actors that explore LGBTQ bias and discrimination in a democratic society.

With a cast of five, this autobiographical narrative centers on a gay black man’s journey through the labyrinth of ethnicity, sexuality, and racial identity in the Land of the Free.
