Prior Learning Assessment Request
Brooklyn College students may request that work completed in a non-accredited, non-traditional learning environment be evaluated by a faculty member in a relevant field of study. This evaluation will determine if the learning outcomes align with those of a Brooklyn College course, potentially qualifying for the awarding of college credit.
How the Request Process Works
If a student believes that work completed in a non-traditional learning environment aligns with the learning outcomes of courses offered at Brooklyn College, they may submit a request to the faculty in the relevant discipline for review and potential equivalency approval.
Students are responsible for providing all necessary information and documentation. Upon submission, requests and support materials will be forwarded to the faculty evaluators in the academic unit offering the related courses or field of study for review and consideration.
If the faculty evaluator determines the request has merit, the approved equivalency will be recorded in CUNYfirst. The Transfer Evaluations Office will process the approved request and notify the student of the review outcome via email.
Important Considerations
The Transfer Evaluation Office takes care of matriculated undergraduate students only. Graduate students should contact Graduate Admissions for assistance with prior learning.
The Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) request is not intended for transfer credits earned through traditional methods at an accredited university, college or institution nor for credits obtained via permit/ePermit. For inquires related to these types of courses, email the ePermit office.
If you are submitting a PLA request after your first semester at the college, there may be financial implications. It is your responsibility to consult with the Financial Aid Office before submitting a request. Once submitted and reviewed, you cannot request to reverse the process.
Submit a Request for Credit
Students looking to receive credit for prior learning should submit the form below.
- Submitting a PLA request does not automatically guarantee approval or processing.
- Your request will be reviewed and must be approved by the faculty evaluator within the academic unit offering the relevant field of study.
- Once a decision is made, you will be notified by email regarding the approval or denial of your request.
- Students are required to submit one PLA request per college course equivalency sought.
- Any documentation submitted can only be used for credit, even if the subject matter overlaps with multiple fields of study.
