Transfer Credit Policies

Brooklyn College’s transfer credit policies ensures that students receive credit based on the original value and content of courses completed at previous institutions. Transferred courses may fulfill different degree requirements or apply differently depending on Brooklyn College’s  curriculum. Keep reading for details.

Credit Limitations

Brooklyn College cannot award you more transfer credits for a course than you originally earned at your previous CUNY or non-CUNY institution. Credit is granted based on the original course’s content and instructional hours, which do not change based on the college or university where it was completed.

Credit Value

Each course has a fixed credit value (e.g., 3 credits) determined by its content and contact hours. This value remains consistent, regardless of which CUNY or non-CUNY institution offered the course.

Transfer Evaluation

When you transfer to Brooklyn College, your coursework is evaluated for transfer credit. The number of credits awarded corresponds directly to the original credit value of each passing course, not exceeding what you earned previously.

Course Equivalency and Application

While the credit value of a transferred course remains the same, its equivalency at Brooklyn College may differ.

This means:

  • A course may fulfill a different requirement (e.g., general education, major, minor, or elective credit) than it did at your previous institution.
  • A course might transfer as equivalent to a specific Brooklyn College course, or as elective credit if no direct match exists.

Reverse Transfer (CUNY Students)

If you are transferring credits from Brooklyn College back to a previous CUNY community college (for example, to complete an associate degree), the same credit principles apply. The course credit value remains unchanged, although its application toward degree requirements may differ based on your community college’s curriculum.
