If you’re interested in how politics shapes cities—and how cities, in turn, shape politics—the Urban Policy and Politics minor is a great choice. This program looks beyond demographic trends to examine how public policies and political actors influence urban life. You’ll explore the political economies of global and U.S. cities, especially New York, and engage with pressing issues like gentrification, segregation, and grassroots movements for justice. With a focus on how race, gender, and class intersect in city life, the minor equips you with the analytical tools to understand—and challenge—the systems that build and divide our urban environments.
This minor will help you think critically about how political forces shape cities, how urban institutions operate, and the role that cities play in struggles for social justice, the environment, economic development, and regional, national, and global politics. Completing the minor demonstrates interdisciplinary insight and a readiness to tackle pressing urban challenges.
