The Financial Aid Process, Step by Step

1. File Your FAFSA and TAP Applications

FAFSA

Filing the FAFSA application is your first step in determining your financial aid eligibility.

Once you file your FAFSA on studentaid.gov, you’ll receive a link to the New York State Tuition Assistance Program, or TAP, which offers grants to eligible New York State residents.

Allow up to seven days for us to receive your FAFSA application.

Apply for Federal Student Aid

TAP

The easiest way to file your TAP application is through the FAFSA. Once you file the FAFSA, you will receive a link to the TAP application. Make sure you follow the prompts to successfully file the TAP application.

According to the New York State Dream Act, some students may qualify to file only a TAP application.

2. Use the Net Price Calculator to Estimate Your Costs

The CUNY Net Price Calculator will help you determine your estimated costs, aid, and net payment while attending Brooklyn College. Review the cost of attendance to understand the total cost of attending Brooklyn College.

3. Check CUNYfirst TO Finalize Your Aid

You may need to submit documents to finalize your aid. Log in to CUNYfirst to see if you have to submit documents.

Note: Cybersecurity rules generally prohibit us from accepting sensitive financial aid documents by email. You can upload documents using the online Student Forms or the Dynamic Forms platforms.

Note to parents or persons assisting students: To comply with federal education laws, financial aid staff are prohibited from disclosing information to you about the student unless you accompany the student and he or she consents to the disclosure during the interaction. Alternatively, the student may file a FERPA release form with the Office of the Registrar, giving written authorization to disclose such information to you in the student’s absence.

General OR Urgent Questions

Our Tier 1 general service representatives can help you by phone, virtually, or in-person for general inquiries and urgent questions.

Phone

Call 718.951.5234 to get answers by phone to your general financial aid, scholarship, tuition/fee balance or refund inquiries. Staff are available during normal business hours.

Online

The virtual Student Financial Services office is a first stop option to answer  your general questions about financial aid, scholarships, and tuition /fee balance or refund

In Person

The Enrollment Services Center (ESC) is another first stop for in-person questions about your financial aid, scholarships, and account balances or refunds.

Complex Questions

Please make an appointment with a Tier 2 advisement professional for planning and more complex situations.

Make an appointment if you need help with:

  • Planning financial aid for each year and academic level, including graduate and doctoral financial aid.
  • Special or unusual circumstances for federal aid
  • Completing a TAP progress and pursuit waiver
  • Questions about the effect of withdrawing from courses on their financial aid eligibility
  • Not meeting Federal Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and need additional assistance with the appeal process.

 

Non-Urgent Questions

The Office of Financial Aid can answer general inquiries such as financial aid status by email.

Response time is one to five business days, depending on the time of year.

Complex questions may require you to make an appointment with a financial aid adviser.

Students with an urgent matter should contact us by phone, online, or in person, as detailed above under General or Urgent Questions.
